Nutrition unit

We have just completed our Tumbling unit in all grade levels.  K-2 students are finishing up their striking skills(hitting something with something else that is not your body- such as batting).  3rd-5th grade students are completing their soccer unit. All of those assessments have been sent home. Our next unit of study will be nutrition.  We will be learning about making healthy eating choices through discussions and games.  I have posted on the side of this blog links for the nutrition assignment.  If they lose their paper, you can print them at home.

I have started a beginner assignment for students in 1st and 2nd grade to work on with their parents.  Eating habits are established by the time that a child is 6 years old, and it is easiest to influence them in a healthy way before the age of 12.  That is why it is so important to educate and encourage our children to eat healthy now.  Ask them about some of the games that we are playing to help learn nutriton facts.  They may be able to teach you something new!

Eating more vegetables would be a great goal for all students and adults.  When I visit the lunch room with 120+ students at a time, I walk the tables to check for vegetables.  I see an average of 7-10 students who have a vegetable at lunch. With the hot lunch program, there are two choices of vegetables every day.  Encourage your child to eat one every day!

How did May Watts compare to the district average?

May Watts students did an excellent job overall in comparison to the district.  Our best areas were the curl-ups and PACER. We did well in most age groups on the sit and reach as well.  Our area of concern is the push-ups.  We scored below the district average in this category.  We will be focusing on push-ups in our daily warm-ups.  We are adding Bosus, dome cones, and push-up pads to help encourage this improvement.  Please encourage your child to practice planks (push-up holding) at home.

District Fitnessgram results are in- these are our "PE- ISATS"

Opportunities for Parent Volunteers

I will be starting fitness testing beginning  Tuesday, Sept.21.  I will need help every day, all day!  On my blog page, I have a link for my schedule so that you can coordinate a time when your child has PE.  The time slots are 9:15-10:30, 10:30-12, 12:45-3:30.  If you can help, please email me at terri_andrews@ipsd.org, or send in a note with the day and time that you are available.  For every two parents that volunteer for a time slot, we save one day of fitness testing!  Duties will include recording, encouraging, timing, measuring, and organizing small groups.

FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE PARENTS:  I am in need of parent volunteers for our Track and Field event on Monday, Sept. 20.  The event will run from 9-12.  We will be running 12 events for almost 120 kids at a time, so we really need your help.  I can use help starting at 8:15 in the morning to set up as well, so please let me know if this is possible for you. If you can only work part of the time, I can still use your assistance.  If you email me, I can send you a copy of the schedule for the event and a handout explaining the event responsibilities.

If you can't come in during school hours but would like to help, I am looking for  bags of Hershey kisses and Tootsie rolls for our 2nd grade through 5th grade students on our running days.

Thanks for your help!
